Chapter Thirteen
I barely slept and in the morning, I came downstairs with tentative steps. I touched the spot where Haru had pressed his lips. It was such a swift, familiar kiss. Like a quick peck before going off to work. Something that distilled a lifetime of love living alongside someone else into a single gesture.
Get over yourself. I had barely met the guy and was already mooning over him? Stockholm syndrome much?
My feet crunched on the carpet. Was this moss? I bent down, brushing a cloud of clover. It smelled fresh, each tiny shoot perky and green.
âYouâre cute, but you donât belong here,â I told it. It surely couldnât get enough sunlight despite the big windows.
I trailed a finger on the half-finished painting up the stairs. It was a shame his colors weren't more all over the house, given how bare and cold some corridors seemed. Then again, maybe he didn't have time to paint all the walls. There could easily be hundreds of corridors if this place really did lead anywhere in the world.
If these doors led everywhere, what about door 207? Where I slid the key? A tendril of fear snagged my heart, like my shirt catching on a nail and dragging me to a halt with an alarming tearing sound. CSON could access the house now. That was a good thing. Right?
Walking past the kitchen where Winter stood banging pots and pans around as he put things away, I headed for the conservatory. I stopped short in the doorway, amused. Haru stood shirtless and stained with blue paint like he'd been wrestling a smurf. He was panting like he'd battled something too, but all he faced was an easel. Surrounding him was copious amounts of paper, thick parchment-type that held ink well. I picked one up, trying not to let the edges flutter.
It was a drawing of me, lying face up in the water. My eyes were closed, eyelashes resting on my cheek, and my neck and chest was mainly submerged except for my boobs. Those were drawn in almost embarrassingly pert and perky detail through the wet shirt clinging to me.
I shifted my arms over my chest. Was that really what I looked like? No way. I picked up another sheet of paper to see a slightly different angle of me in the water. This time I was getting out, but overlaid with another figure. I frowned at it. Maybe he used this one as a guide?
I glanced over at Haru. He was focused, using his fingers to make very deliberate strokes as though he caressed the canvas. I cleared my throat to get his attention.
Haru looked over at me, dark circles prominent. Had he slept at all? Yet as soon as he saw me, the shadows around his eyes transformed to welcome then concern. "Did you have another nightmare?"
"Hi. And, uh, no.â Hundreds of pages laid scattered all over the floor, some with clumps of moss already crawling across them. "I've never seen an artist at work.
